Application technology of Glufosinate-ammonium

After Paraquat was prohibitted in China, many plants start to register and sell Glufosinate-ammonium. The market looks big, but, if can’t handle the application technology well, it could be thorny rose.
 
1: The action mechanism of Glufosinate-ammonium
It’s a wide-spectrum herbicides with contact toxicity and certain systemic action. It takes glutamine synthetase as target enzyme, inhibit the glutamine synthetase’s activity, cause the disorder of the plants’ nitrogen metabolism and excessive accumulation, leads to the chloroplast’s disintegration, destroy the plants’ photosynthesis and finally kill the weeds.
After the glufosinate-ammonium is absorbed by the weeds, it can be transported in the plants’ xylem by plants’ transpiration. Under normal temperature, weeds will start to become yellowish and die from 3-5 days after the spraying. The lasting period can be up to 30 days.

2: Suitable crops of Glufosinate-ammonium
It’s mainly registered in on cultivated land, papaya plantation, rubber plantation, tea and fruits plantation, vegetables field, etc.. It has good control of the annual and perennial grass, broad-leaf weeds and nutsedge.  
 
3: The application qty
For example, like Glufosinate-ammonium 200g/l SL, we ever made the tests. The result shows that: For common weeds, 100-120ml per 15Kg water can has good result; but for some swart weeds like reed, lalang grass, 200ml min. per 15Kg water can have good result and the cost is high.

4: Whether Glufosinate-ammonium can be used to kill the inter-row weeds in maize field post-emergence?
Yes it can be used as post-emergence herbicides to kill the inter-row weeds, but should be used carefully. It should be done around 10 leaves of the maize and in sunny weather without wind. A protection mask should be installed onto the sprayer nozzle to avoid the drifting of the products. Though Glufosinate-ammonium’s systemic action is not so strong, but we should take care of the occurring of the phytotoxicity.

5: What advantages Glufosinate-ammonium have?
1). Safety: It mainly kill the weeds by its contact toxicity and has poor systemic action. So it’s suitable for short roots crops too like tea plantation and grape plantation.
2). Quick-action and long lasting: Under normal weather, after the spraying, weeds will turn to yellowish in 2-3 days and die step by step; the lasting period can be up to 30 days.
3). Conserve the soil and water: Because it not kills the roots.
4). Wider spectrum: It has good effect too for even some swart weeds like horseweed herb.

6: Why it doesn’t have good result sometimes?
Its effect is mainly affected by 3 factors: Humidity, Temperature, Sunshine.
Humidity: In dry weather, to decrease the transpiration, the plants will close the stoma, curl the leaves and thicken the skin of the leaves. All are not in favor of the absorption of the Glufosinate-ammonium; but, in humid weather, the wax coat of the leaves will keep moist condition, open the stoma and fasten the absorption of the Glufosinate-ammonium.
Temperature: Under low temperature, it’s difficult for Glufosinate-ammonium to pass the cuticle and the cell membrane and the control effect will be affected by a lot; following with the increasing of the temperature, the control effect will increase too. We suggest to use above 15“°C
Sunshine: In good sunshine, the plants’ transpiration is strong and will be in favor of its efficiency.
 
7: How to use Glufosinate-ammonium more efficiently?
a). In non-cultivated land, can add some Glyphosate and the bounce condition of the weeds will decrease obviously. We ever made test: In 15Kg water, after adding Glufosinate-ammonium 200g/l SL, add 25g Glyphosate Ammonium 88.8% SG again and the effect is good. The exact qty of the Glyphosate added should be tested according to the local weeds condition and then apply in wide range.
b). For some fields mainly have broad-leaf weeds like purslane, we can add products like Fluoroglycofen-ethyl 20% EC to increase the control spectrum; to control Alligator Alternanthera and Creeping dayflower, the weeds will turn yellowish and drop the leaves, but may turn green in 10 days, so it’s better to add Fluroxypyr-meptyl 20% EC 20-30ml/15kg water; to control Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn that has high resistance, it’s better to add Glufosinate-ammonium 120-150ml/15Kg water, or add 20ml clethodim 24% EC; we have many cases and cann’t listed all here.
c). Because it mainly acts by contact toxicity, so, during the application, should spray very carefully onto each part of the weeds to promise its absorption. Also we can add some penetrating agent like silicone.
d). When dilute the product, don’t use the turbid rive water because the efficiency maybe decreased. And it’s better to dilute by 2 times to promise the best result.
